Things to Know About Hair Loss

Hair Loss Overview

Did you know that everybody’s hair follicles shrink as they age? That’s why people’s hair tends to “thin” as they get older. Basically, hair isn’t as dense as it used to be. Thanks a lot, aging!

A Brief Overview of Hair Loss

What are some signs you’re losing hair? If you notice more hairs on your pillow, more strands caught up in your hairbrush, more hair in the bathtub drain, and/or your scalp gets sunburned more easily, then chances are you’re losing hair.

Over time, not only do follicles shrink, but people tend to lose some follicles overall. They just don’t work as well as they used to. Ugh.

For a long time, people just assumed hair loss was a man’s problem. After all, you sure do see a lot of men over a certain age who are losing their hair. Interestingly, women make up about 40 percent of American hair loss sufferers. For both men and women, hair loss can cause self image/confidence problems, leading to emotional distress.

Most doctors don’t take time to worry about hair loss because it’s not seen as life threatening. Tell that, though, to someone who used to have a full head of hair and is now losing their beloved locks. The reality is this: hair loss makes people feel unattractive. For some, it can feel like “life is over.” It takes an emotional toll and definitely affects a person’s overall health. Very few people don’t worry about hair loss. It tends to happen to most people, and no one wants it to happen!

Sometimes hair loss can be temporary. Most times it’s long lasting. Have you heard of the term “alopecia?” It’s a medical term describing excessive or abnormal hair loss. When alopecia occurs, it’s a symptom of something else going on in the body, such as a hormonal imbalance or a disease. Other times, people may be genetically predisposed to losing hair– their mom or dad had that issue so they will, too. Other causes of hair loss can be the medications you’re on, stress in your life, and/or being pregnant.
