Did you know that hair is actually a protein filament that grows from follicles in the skin? Everyone has a unique head of hair, however, people begin to lose hair at different points in their lives. Who is at a risk for hair loss and why?
For starters, take a look at your parents. If either of them have hair loss then there is a genetic inherited tendency that you, too, might have hair loss. It’s “in the genes.”
Next, consider your age. If you’re at or nearing the age of 50, chances are you have less hair than you did when you were younger. This is a normal process of aging. People’s hair tends to thin out over time.
Hair loss can also occur when a person suffers with a disease or illness. Of course it’s commonly known that chemotherapy for cancer treatment can lead to hair loss, but there are other things that affect the hair on a person’s head. For instance, ringworm of the scalp sounds gross, but it does exist and can lead to hair loss. Thyroid diseases, lupus and even severe infections/high fevers can cause hair loss, too. On a related note, certain medicines and medical treatments can cause hair loss– be sure to read the fine print before taking pills.
Finally, how you care for and/or style your hair can have an impact on its healthiness. Some people are unknowingly doing damage to their hair.
