Is it Possible to Prevent Male Pattern Baldness?

As many as two-thirds of all men experience thinning hair by the age of 35, and unfortunately, a lot of the quick fixes that you see on late-night TV infomercials are simply gimmicks. Thinning or balding hair can understandably be harmful to your self-esteem, and there’s not much that you can do to completely prevent or reverse male pattern baldness—though science hasn’t given up the search for a cure.

The short answer is that no, at the moment there is no surefire way to prevent the development of male pattern baldness. However, in the meantime, there are some tips and tricks you can use to help prolong the life of your full hair.

Start With Your Health

Changing up your diet may help to prevent further thinning of your hair. You should avoid fried foods, and cut back on sweets. Insulin from desserts and extra oil will cause a flood of testosterone, which will cause contribute to the added byproduct dihydrotestosterone (or DHT), which is what leads to finer and thinning hair.

You can also combat thinning hair by switching shampoos. The active ingredient ketoconazole, which is an antifungal that’s used to prevent dandruff, has been known to prevent the release of DHT in hair follicles. But be careful—you only need to use this special shampoo two to three times a week, or your hair will dry out. Shower with a nonchemical baby shampoo in between treatments.

Other Options

Try topical treatments if you haven’t already, but tread carefully and know what side effects to look out for. Options like Rogaine and Propecia that are FDA approved are good choices, but know that it sometimes takes as long as six months before you’ll see results, so don’t give up after an unsuccessful two weeks.

There may not be a cure or a reversal for male pattern baldness as of yet, but there are some options out there to slow the process and help to maintain the hair that’s on your head.
