Can Poor Thyroid Function Cause Hair Loss?

Thyroid Issues and Hair LossLots of people have heard of the thyroid, but other than having heard the word, they’re probably not too sure what it is, where it is, or what it does. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of a person’s neck. It produces hormones that regulate a person’s speed of metabolism. So, a person’s thyroid can essentially slow down or rev up the body’s use of energy and such. If the production of thyroid hormones get disrupted, then a person has problems.

Take, for instance, a person with a thyroid problem… when their thyroid isn’t functioning in a normal way, hormones are “off.” And when hormones are off, problems occur. Did you know, for example, that the thyroid hormone has a role in the development (and maintenance of) hair follicles? So poor thyroid function could lead to hair loss!

Thyroid Issues and Scalp Disorders

If and when the body has too much or too little thyroid hormone, “telogen effluvium” can happen– this is a scalp disorder where hair roots enter the resting stage of the hair cycle too early. When this occurs, scalp hairs fall out. In fact, hair can come out in handfuls. Meanwhile, people with autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimoto’s disease, can also experience hair loss, too, in the form of “alopecia.” In this case, hair may be lost in circular patches.

For those with overactive thyroid issues, they may be prescribed antithyroid drugs such as methimazole or propylthiouracil… and hair loss is a possible side effect of taking those pills.

How do you know if you have thyroid issues? Besides hair loss, you might feel cold, tired, depressed, or constipated. You could also feel irritable, sweaty, weak and notice fine/brittle hair. The best advice is to consult your doctor to have your thyroid levels checked. A doctor might prescribe a synthetic hormone to treat an underactive thyroid or antithyroid drugs for overactive thyroid.

Eating certain foods can help a person have healthy hair, including fish, eggs, cheese, whole grains, green vegetables, and protein-rich foods.
